According to Reuters, on February 12, research firm Rho Motion said global pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles sales increased by nearly 18% year-on-year in January, and sales growth in European and American markets for the first time since February last year Overtaken the Chinese market.
However, global sales of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles fell by 35% in January compared with the performance in December last year. Rho Motion data manager Charles Lester said the European auto market started strong this year as EU CO2 emission standards came into effect, while China's Spring Festival holiday affected sales growth.
According to Rho Motion, global sales of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles increased by 17.7% year-on-year to 1.3 million units, which is the third consecutive month of slowdown in growth. Among them, sales of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the Chinese market increased by 11.8% year-on-year to 700,000 vehicles; sales of the European market were 250,000 vehicles, up 21% from the same period in 2024; sales of the US and Canadian markets rose by 22.1 year-on-year % to 130,000 vehicles; in the remaining markets, the total sales increase reached 50%.
Among the main markets in the continent, sales of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the French market fell by 52% year-on-year last month, mainly because the country introduced a weight tax on plug-in hybrid vehicles; Germany's sales rose by more than 40% because the country's sudden end of electric vehicle subsidies in January 2024 led to a low sales base.
Currently, governments around the world are adopting various policies to promote the popularity of electric vehicles, while trade tensions and a slowdown in the automobile market may lead to factory closures and many people losing their jobs. In January this year, China extended the car trade-in subsidy to 2025 as part of the consumer trade-in plan. In the same month, Europe held a new round of consultations with automotive industry executives, trade unions and related interest groups on the carbon dioxide emission target.
In 2024, global sales of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles increased by 25% year-on-year to more than 17 million units, mainly due to the continued growth of electric vehicle sales in the Chinese market and the stabilization of sales in the European market.
